Boston has many people looking for low income apartments. If you need immediate help if would be beneficial to check out the Metropolitan Boston Housing Partnership (MBHP) to find out if they have an affordable apartments for rent that you can move into. The mission of the MBHP is to provide low income housing and apartments for families in the Boston area. The goal is to try and get people back on their feet so they can hold down a job and become a contributing member of society. Sometimes all it takes is a warm place to live and people can respond quickly by getting a full time job, paying taxes and helping the city become a great place to live.
Boston accepts Section 8 housing vouchers, so if you are calling on an apartment you found on Craiglist, make sure to ask the landlord if they accept Section 8 housing vouchers. If you can use your voucher, you can use that to supplement your rent payment. For example if you found an apartment that accepts Section 8 and costs $1,000 a month, you many only have to pay $300 a month and the federal government will pick up the rest of the rent in the form of your housing voucher.
You need to register for Section 8, so check with the local Boston housing authority to see if you can get yourself on the list to getting subsidized housing. Many apartment owners and landlords accept Section 8 because it helps them get tenants to pay the rent they need so the owner can afford to make the mortgage payment.
These low income apartments come with many of the same amenities you would expect in a regular apartment. Often they have electric heat, washer and dryer and a kitchen with a stove, microwave and many other things that are necessary to call a place home. Decorate your apartment with your own furniture or use a local thrift store to pick up cheap couches, picture and tables and you will have the place looking great in no time!
