Finding affordable housing in Raleigh, like in many places across the country, can be difficult. There are a lot of houses out there that have been foreclosed on and there are many other homes that are up for sale. However, that doesn't mean that people who are looking for housing can afford them. A lot of people have lost their high-paying jobs and been forced to take employment that doesn't pay nearly as well. Still others are holding onto decent jobs but their adjustable rate mortgage has sent their payments up so high that they are being forced to move out of their home.
They can no longer make the payments and are slowly heading toward bankruptcy. Thankfully, the city of Raleigh sees that this is becoming a more serious problem and they are subsidizing some low income apartments so that people will have a place to live. It doesn't apply to everyone, and not every person who applies will qualify, but it is worth looking into for people who live in Raleigh and find that their bills are getting out of control because they no longer make the money that they used to. At least many of them will have options.
This applies to senior citizens and to people who are just starting out, too, because they often don't have a lot of money. Housing and Urban Development in Raleigh can tell any individual whether he or she qualifies for one of the low income apartments based on various guidelines such as income, age, and family size.
There are many communities where there are safe, clean apartments which can be subsidized. People don't have to move to a dirty, frightening neighborhood to get some help with their rent. They only have to check with HUD to see whether they meet the income guidelines. If they do, they can work with HUD to find an apartment that they like and that they can afford based on the money that they currently make. Some of these placements are indefinite and some are designed with moving out and buying a home in mind at a later date. Both are helpful to people who have little money and are running out of options.
