If you are looking for low income apartments in Akron, you need to check out the Housing Placement Department. If you need to apply for a low income apartment you will need to get on a waiting list that is specific to local areas you request and then you are put into a queue based on when you applied. If you are paying more than 30% of your income for your monthly rent and utility bills (water, power, sewer, etc) then you get up to seven points. If your home was taken over by the government as part of a new development you can receive up to 3 points. If you are a veteran of a war you may get 3 points and if you are a local Akron resident that is worth 1 point. All your points are totaled up and help determine the order in which you may receive a low income apartment in Akron, Ohio.
There are income guidelines for receiving subsidized housing. The income levels are tiered based on the number of people that you have in your family. For example if you have 3 people in your family and make under $44,400 a year you qualify for a low income home. If you make under $27,750 for a family of 3 then you may qualify for a very low income house. The scale goes all the way up to 8 family members and $65,150. Keep in mind this sliding scale is reset every year, so check with the Akron housing authority to determine if you qualify.
There are many different types of Akron housing programs. You have conventional housing which is for families and individuals and the elderly and you have to live somewhere in Summit County. There is also a housing voucher program (HCVP), this is for privately managed and controlled homes and apartments managed by local Akron landlord. The nice thing about getting a voucher is that you can decide where you want to live - as long as the landlord chooses to accept your voucher. There is a similar program called the Housing Choice Voucher Program which is location specific. Some of the options include the Chapel Hill Towers and the Retirement Residence of Green for elderly families. There is also the Channelwood Village located in West Akron on Frederick Boulevard.
