Portland is a beautiful place to live year-round but like most cities today there is a housing problem and a lack of jobs for a lot of people. College graduates who were so hopeful just a few short years ago are finding that they really don't have many good job prospects today because no one is hiring and people who are about to retire and were counting on their stock portfolios to see them through are finding that they might not be so comfortable after all. Some of them elect to keep working. Some of them want to work but get laid off.
Still others are already retired and they want to get back into the work force but there just isn't a job opening for them because companies are cutting back. No matter what your situation, though, Portland does have help for low income apartments where people can stay while they get back on their feet or while they live out their lives. Some places only allow a person to stay for a certain length of time. Other places allow certain people, like seniors, to remain there indefinitely. Most of it depends on which apartment complex a person goes to and what the particular rules are that the person falls under, as there are different programs for seniors, for the disabled, and for some other groups.
Most low income apartments in Portland are considered to be short term options, though, and the goal is to educate the people who move into them and show them what they need to do to succeed, to have a better financial future, and to eventually own their own home. It can be done, even on a limited budget, but people usually need a lot of assistance to see this and they don't always get that help.
With low income housing, though, the rent is subsidized so that people are only paying around thirty percent of their income for living expenses. That means that they're more able to save money for a down payment on a home, pay off their debts, and see that they can attain a better future for themselves and for their families.
