Cincinnati can be a great place to live, but if you don't have a lot of money it can be a struggle. Fortunately for people who don't have a big income there are low income apartments that they can live in. These are clean, safe, and decent places for people who need to get back on their feet, who are just starting out, or who are elderly and living on a very fixed income.
There are all kinds of reasons that people might end up needing a low income apartment, and with the foreclosure problems and the job market, more people are going to need those kinds of apartments, and for a longer period of time. Many people who stay in low income apartments in Cincinnati only remain there for a few months to a couple of years. They get through their schooling and/or get a better job, and they move up to an unsubsidized apartment or purchase a house of their own. There are some people, though, who remain in the low income housing because it is all that they are able to afford. As long as they have a steady job they can stay there, and exceptions are made for elderly people. They have steady income from social security so they are not required to have a job to qualify for low income housing.
People who are able to work and are not doing so, however, generally cannot qualify for low income apartments. They are not designed to be rent-free. The person who qualifies for one of them still has to pay around thirty percent of his or her income toward the rent and utilities. The difference between that and what it actually costs to live there is subsidized by the government.
A lot of people think that low income housing gives people a 'free ride,' but it does not. It simply helps them keep a roof over their head and feed their families. A lot of them are looking for better jobs, and many go to school, as well, so that they can make a better life for themselves and the families that they often support.
