In the Chattanooga area there are many low income apartments that can be rented when people need them. With the struggling economy there have been more people recently who have needed these apartments, as well. That's unfortunate, but at least there are low income apartments available for these people to move into, provided they meet the criteria. They cannot make too much money, of course, but they also cannot make too little money. If they are not employed and do not have a steady job, they will not qualify for one of Chattanooga's low income apartments.
The way that these apartments work is that a person who meets the qualifications rents one of them, they pay around thirty percent of their income in rent and utilities, and the government subsidizes the rest of the housing expenses. That means that individuals who make less money pay less rent than those who make more money, but there are still confines within the program and rules for when a person has to leave it. If they would get a large raise, for example, they would see their subsidies decrease or possibly disappear entirely, because they would be making enough money to pay their rent in its entirety.
For some people that would mean that they would have to move. For other people it would just mean that they would have to pay all of their rent. What the requirements are for income and how long a person can stay in an apartment can vary based on what apartment complex they are in. The size of the family also matters, since a single person isn't going to be given subsidies on a three bedroom apartment.
Instead, they can get a one-bedroom place to live and leave the larger apartments for the people who have families. No matter what, though, there are options for people who don't make a lot of money to have safe, decent places to live in the Chattanooga area. That's one of the biggest benefits of low income apartments. People can make ends meet, and even save some money to put a down payment on a home of their own.
